Parallel Hybrid System

Driving the wheels with an electric motor and an internal combustion engine, using the electric motor to recharge the battery

A parallel hybrid system uses both an electric motor and an internal combustion engine to drive the wheels. Its basic components are an electric motor, an internal combustion engine, a battery, an inverter and a transmission.
With the parallel hybrid system, the motor is powered by the battery to drive the wheels, and is also used as a generator to recharge the battery. Consequently, the motor cannot be used to generate electricity while the car is running. Because the flow of power is in parellel, this system is called a "Parallel Hybrid System".
