Alongside its gas/petrol engine, Camry Hybrid incorporates a compact and lightweight, permanent-magnet synchronous AC motor. A powerful step-up converter drives the motor with up to 650 V, providing hefty torque the instant the accelerator is depressed. As a result, departures in Camry Hybrid are silky smooth and acceleration is seamless.

In addition to complementing the engine as a power source, the permanent-magnet motor generates power. Whenever the driver decelerates or brakes, the vehicle's wheels turn the motor and feed energy to the battery, where it is stored for emissions-free driving use.
