Camry Hybrid Battery

Advanced Nickel-Metal Hydride Battery

Toyota's state-of-the-art technology produced the lightweight, technologically advanced Nickel-Metal Hydride Battery at the heart of Camry Hybrid's electric powertrain.

The engineering challenge lay not only with the battery but the position of this significant component within the vehicle. Refusing to compromise on the comfort and spaciousness for which Camry is loved, engineers devoted many hours to creating painstaking mockups of countless configurations, eventually settling on a position behind the rear seat that houses the battery module, monitoring unit, system main relay, service plug, and DC-DC converter in a single mainframe. This positioning preserves Camry's roomy trunk, and trunk-through usability of the rear seats.

Via a compact step-up converter producing 650 V, the battery provides the drivetrain with 45 horsepower, and is able to deliver the equivalent of the electrical needs of several dozen households.
